Covet: Letterpress Magnets

The longest that a fridge magnet had stayed stuck to the fridge in my house is two days. This is not a case of weak magnets, no. This is a case of “cats attacking anything (even if it’s just shadow) on a wall.”

Which is why my love for this set of letterpress magnets will remain unrealized.

This is one of Modcloth’s best-sellers in their Apartment category. It’s a set “complete with an array of serif and sans-serif capitals, exclamation points, and ampersands – everything you’ll need to make a bold statement on any metal surface!” Gosh, so tempting. But  because of the aforementioned cats, my dream to make limericks on the fridge with these letterpress magnets will remain out of reach.

If your cats don’t really care about things on the wall, you can get this magnet set HERE.

Paper Landmarks: For Those Who Love Paper and Traveling

My sophomore year in college introduced me to architectural models. My sister was finishing her thesis for her degree in architecture and once or twice, I helped out with making the models. Okay, fine, I only cut the templates and did not actually build the models. However, my fascination with miniature structures most likely started then. Today, I dabble in miniature dollhouses and drool over paper model kits.

Great examples are these paper models of architectural landmarks:

These are sold by Paper Landmarks. Their kits showcase paper replicas of famous architectural landmarks from all over the world. While there are probably replicas made of metal or ceramic of these structures, they don’t offer you something that these paper models do: the joy of assembling. These kits are delivered to your doorstep in their unassembled glory, inviting you to get your crafty gears going.

8 Adorable Personalized Pencils / Pencil Sets

I live with an artist so we always have small buckets of drawing materials, pencils included. But I like to think that in an alternate universe where we are not interested in art at all, we would still be big fans of pencils. Especially if they are as delightful as the following:

Aren’t they the cutest? They are perfect for writing on greeting cards. Even better: some of them can also serve as greeting cards. They belong to a small group of gift items that are both functional and cute, funny and sweet.

Breed a New Generation of Photographers with Wooden Camera Toys

Amélie is one of my all-time favorite films. And the scenes of young Amélie taking photos with a used Instamatic camera are utterly adorable.

Seriously, TOO DARN CUTE!

This explains my squeal of delight when I chanced upon Twig Creative’s shop. Twig Creative is an independent seller that specializes on wooden toys. Each toy is lovingly handmade using sustainable materials. Some of their well-loved products are wooden camera toys:

Covet: CMYK Playing Cards

The standard deck of playing cards has a timeless design. It had been revised countless of times to suit (get it? get it?) many types of brands and aesthetics, from Hello Kitty to your local celebrities. This CMYK version, however, is probably the first deck that I seriously covet.

cmyk

The perfect deck of playing cards for just about anyone who produces and works with printed things and colors. Not only is it visually appealing, I am also quite enamored with the way they replaced the standard suits with the four inks — cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. On top of that, each suit comes in gradating opacities. Clever, yes?

8 Funny and Wise 30 Rock Prints and Products

Liz Lemon, Jack Donaghy, and all the other misfits working in the TGS show at 30 Rockefeller Plaza have said goodbye. I watched the last two episodes only last night and while Liz and Jack have that awkward conversation by the water, it hit me that I will never have another week laughing at and with these characters.

So I did what I usually do when feeling a wee bit down: window shop online. Which led me to these fantastic 30 Rock-inspired products by independent artists and sellers:

The 4th item is a Valentine’s Day greeting card. My favorite are the pencils, though; I love saying “What the what?”

Covet: Typographic Cinema Display Board

We love a good signage. We love words. Which is probably why, when confronted with this display board, I had a “case of the wants.” My other covet posts (this and this) were about clever letterpress-inspired items but this falls under the “crave and covet” category, too. Because these display boards showcase sans serif fonts that are pleasing to the eyes (with proper kerning, too!) and also because they invite you to be clever with words.

These Typographic Display Boards are designed and sold by Goodwin and Goodwin. They come in large and medium sizes. Every purchase comes with font cards.

3 Reasons to Get an Everlasting Paper Flower for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day means flowers and chocolates. If you’re looking for a way to tell your special someone that your love will never die, we direct you to the Everlasting Paper Flower from Frances & Francis.

Here are reasons why you should choose a paper flower over real ones:

1. Everlasting – Nothing says everlasting love than flowers that will never wilt. A flower from Frances & Francis will not succumb to the clutches of time. And even if you forget to buy flowers for your love next year, you will still be able to point to the paper one you got her/him this year and say “Hey, that one still counts!”

2. Handmade - These paper flowers are made with love. And when it comes to expressions of love, supporting an independent seller is always a good thing.

3. Art - These paper flowers are more than just handcrafted items. They are works of art worthy of a shadowbox. They could very well be items that you can hand down to your kids and grandkids.

Create Cardboard Friends Using Milimbo Kits

When you were a kid, how many hours did you spend playing with your Lego blocks? Countless, I bet. While Lego is still the bees knees these days, there are now independent sellers who offer “building” toys of other variety. Take this cardboard building kit by Milimbo. This is just like Lego, but made of paper and less likely to injure the feet of many unsuspecting mothers.

The “creatures” above are from the Jungling Kit. It is a cardboard kit for building animals in a jungle, such as a monkey, tiger, and giraffe. The kit comes with 42 pieces, withwhich one can build trees, plants, and a tree hut. Also included are different-colored adhesives for giving the jungle creatures more personality. Sound fun, right?

If you want to buy your own kit, check out Etsy. You may also check out the Milimbo blog for ideas about the many fun things kids can have with these cardboard creatures/creations.
